Pasadena, Tujunga and the Getty - 2/12/2011

Saturday... I slept in and Kat had a waffle with Damian.  Once we got rockin' and rollin' we headed to Pasadena for some breakfast (or Kat's second).  It was a really neat place and after walking around for a bit admiring the shops and scenery, we decided on Texas style breakfast tacos.  They had a bunch of avocado on them and were delicious.  A side bonus was that the water came in beakers instead of pitchers.

Day 10 pictures :)
It was then off to Tujunga to visit my cousin, Sara, and her three kids.  We got there and were greeted with big hugs and much excitement as it has been awhile since I'd seen my cousin and had only met her oldest daughter once quite a while ago.  Kat and I were treated to a tour of the house and all of the plants which was quite fun.  The backyard is almost vertical and makes for really cool plant growing.  The oldest shared her extensive plant knowledge, the middle her monkey like climbing abilities and the youngest his acrobatics and dance moves.  There was also a lot of laughing and dragon ball z tidbits flying around.  I had so much fun getting to know my first cousins once removed!  Our afternoon ended with some really amazing Mexican food, a number of rousing games of telephone :), and some incredibly delicious banana pudding.  We said our goodbyes and the sun began to set.

Our next stop was The Getty Center and we had hoped to see the sunset from the building there.  However, traffic on the way over, a really full parking garage (I suppose everyone else was also taking advantage of the free parking after 5pm), and what must have been a rather old tram (at least rather slow), meant we only had a little bit of light left when we got there.  After taking what pictures we could outside we headed into the first building.

The first exhibit we saw was a room full of preservation examples.  It was pretty amazing to see what technology is able to uncover in the old paintings and drawings.  Across the hall was a gallery which held a few new pieces recently obtained by the Getty alongside some previously owned pieces that were related.  Seeing how the museum decides what to get based on what it previously owned was also interesting.  Next up were a number of paintings and sculptures that always amaze.  Kat and I both enjoyed seeing new examples of the works of painters such as Van Gogh, Monet and Manet.  All in all, another great day in California.

P.S.  Kat and Damian had a pretty competative game of plants vs. zombies going on while we were there.
