Baltimore - 3/10/2011

Click here for day 36 pictures!
The first day of our fifth week on the road brought us into an incredible downpour.  We put it off for as long as possible.  Kat said goodbye to Meredith as she left for work and then got back in bed.  After the two of us got up we lingered over yummy oatmeal (with apples, brown sugar and raisins) and chatted with Kevin.  Our look at the top 50 free things to do in Baltimore found only one thing that was completely inside and so off to the Baltimore Museum of Art we finally went.

We managed to avoid most of the massive puddles (mini lakes?) as we walked halfway around the museum building trying to find an open door, but when we got in were greeted with smiles.  We even got to put our umbrellas in some really cool holders and check our wet coats.  The first exhibit we came to was one of photography.  Some of the pictures were amazing, many more disturbing and most were a combination of both.  It was a great exhibit to see though left me on edge.

A small enclosed courtyard filled with trees and benches greeted us next.  We looked out the huge windows into this calming rainy scene and just soaked it in.  The surrounding walls held a number of Antioch mosaics.  It was pretty neat to read about how they came to be there and to imagine where they used to sit, the people who walked on them so many years ago.  The next few wings were a mix of sculptures, paintings and furniture.  Kat and I would go to the same wing, but explore on our own, hitting different rooms at different times.  We would trade off the camera periodically and it was interesting to look back later and see which pieces we each chose to capture.  Also funny which pieces became repeats.

Getting hungry and so we headed to the Red Star Saloon which had been recommended to us earlier and had free parking!  It was a saloon from way back when.  Sailors had come to port and followed a string of red stars to get a warm welcome and food.  Hey, we were also looking for warm food on this cold, rainy day.  We got the mac and cheese and a BBQ chicken pizza.  The mac and cheese was disappointing and bland, but the pizza was amazing and I would definitely not mind having that again.  There are a few random pictures as by this time in our trip we're getting a little antsy.  We don't have as much patience as we had 4 weeks ago :)

Our trip addled brains also couldn't figure out what to do next.  We drove around the city, sometimes in circles, passed the visionary museum, the power plant, a random statue and the aquarium while also getting peeks at the inner harbor.  This got a little ridiculous and so the next thing that popped up we stopped at.  This happened to be the Lexington Market and cost three dollars to park at.  Oh well, it sounded fun, we wanted to "watch butchers and fishmongers at work, and smell wonderful food cooking.... get a feel for what doing the food shopping used to be like."  Hm, maybe it should have read, "drive past the outside, imagine what it used to be... and keep moving, not really a place for tourists anymore."  We're not kidding, dirty and scary, don't go in!

It was time to be on our way and so off to Delaware we went.  We got into Wilmington and headed straight to CR Hooligans where my cousin works.  This is apparently my trip to catch up with cousins I haven't seen in way too long!  It was fun catching up, but we were getting exhausted and so took a few hours to blog and veg before meeting up with my Aunt Leslie and her boyfriend, Harvey, for dinner.  We ended up eating at Kid Shelleens and had duck quesadillas as an appetizer.  They were delicious!  The rest of dinner was pretty yummy as well.  After we said goodbye to my aunt and Harvey we headed back to Cassie's place and hung out for a bit.  Actually ended up hanging out until the bar closed but Kat can tell you more about that.  Day 36 to an end.
